Excluding Kids from Birthday Parties

Stephanie and her three year old son Jack were heading to a local park when they walked by a house where a group of Jack’s friends from his preschool were gathered holding presents. Jack was excited to see his friends and ran over to say hello.

happy_birthday_cake“Are you going to Zacks’ party?” one of them asked. Jack looked at his mom expectantly. When she said, “No honey, we weren’t invited,” Jack burst into tears. Stephanie looked at the group assembled and realized that of the ten kids in the preschool class, Jack was the only one who had not been invited.

The preschool had a policy that all children in the class had to be invited to parties. A few days later, Stephanie called the other mother to let her know how hurt her child had been to be excluded. The other mother replied, “I believe this is a private party at my house, and I am not obliged to affiliate it with the preschool at all. I told Zack he could invite 10 children, and I can’t choose who he invites or does not invite.”

Stephanie was extremely concerned about making it right for her child, so she called the other mother back and asked her if she could have Zack over for a private birthday party with her son. They had Zack over, made a cake, blew out the candles and had Jack give him a present. It made it right for Jack and that was all that mattered.
